Following the restoration of the Century Cotton Mills tower by the Halifax County Historical Society, attention was drawn to the site on which the tower is located. The protective chain link fence surrounding the tower was rusted and the walkway from the sidewalk to the door was crumbling.
The Historical Society, with the endorsement of the South Boston town council, mounted a fundraising effort to replace the fence with a black wrought iron fence and gate. The cost for the new fence was raised through the selling of memorial bricks which also served to replace the crumbling walkway.
The laser-etched bricks honored a relative that worked at the Century Cotton Mills or was a remembrance of a Sunday dinner at a table covered with a tablecloth or napkins produced at Century Cotton Mills or simply a wish to memorialize an historic building. The cost of each brick was $100.00 and each could be etched with up to 3 lines with 20 spaces on each line.
Approximately 200 bricks for the sidewalk have been sold to date. The town of South Boston installed the first group of memorial bricks in the new walkway as well as the new fence. More memorial bricks will be available for sale at a later date. Just check this website.
Shown above are examples of the many persons and/or families that have been honored with a Memorial Brick. All those memorialized are not former Mill workers, but those loved ones donors wanted to honor while also supporting the restoration of the Century Cotton Mills Tower.
